Top 5 News Outlets

NBC News - Breaking News & Top Stories - Latest World, US & Local News | NBC News

Keeping up with the news is an important component of any individual's interaction with the world around them. The distribution of news is dramatically increased however by the introduction of social media and the newer generations being more engaged with those sources. This can then have a negative consequence by creating the distribution of "fake news" and heavily weighted content. For example, there is a higher distribution of politically driven content, which markets the ideology of relating to a person's idols by resonating with the same political party as them. Similarly, there is a greater increase in gossip and "fake news" through the use of social media and web browsers. The increase of these problems in the news creates an even bigger need for close attention and fact-checking the news that people see. It's important to take each piece of information with a grain of salt, and cross-check the information in order to not fall victim to the consequences of fast media in the contemporary world.

1. Fox News

I primarily use Fox News as a way of getting information about the world. This is a National-Based News Outlet that covers content relating to both the nation and the world as a whole. Fox sends out a wide variety of information about different areas of the news. Fox focuses on topics within the country that are perceived to be newsworthy and often will report on many different perspectives of political topics regardless of the site being primarily right-leaning. Fox promotes advocacy for Constitutional and individual unalienable rights. Fox also continues to report on topics such as sports, the world, American Politics, and social issues often untouched by mainstream media.

2. 9 News

9 News is a local news channel specific to the Denver-Metro area. Being from outside of Denver, Colorado, I grew up watching 9 News as a way of getting information surrounding the local area. They report on typical News regarding weather, local happenings, sports, and local Government updates. I often follow 9 News in order to keep in touch with the community and get consistent weather updates on the city. Being in Colorado, the weather often changes on a dime so keeping up with the weather regularly is very important. I also follow the Colorado Avalanche very closely so it is nice to have an outlet to follow my state's sports teams and read news relating to them.

3. NBC News

NBC News is a relatively objective news source that touches on both domestic and international regards. I often use NBC as a way to cross-reference information given through Fox News, and get an objective account of different news stories. NBC also often gives viewpoints from opposing political parties, which allows it to be more objective. The objectiveness of the site allows for a better understanding of the information because it allows for people to get information without letting opinions cloud their judgment. Objective news outlets are not only a good source of information, but a good source for fact-checking information brought on by other news sources.

4. Tik Tok

TikTok is a social media outlet that consists of 30-second to three-minute-long videos that range in content from a wide variety of topics. Though TikTok is not my number one source of media, I do follow multiple accounts that provide information regarding criminal justice, politics, and environmental concerns in the country/world. TikTok provides a way to learn topics and information relating to the news, which then gets cross-checked and followed up with by other bigger and more trustworthy news outlets. I will often learn about topics from this outlet and follow up with it on NBC, Fox, or 9 News to make sure that the content is both credible and accurate. As stated earlier, it is essential to fact-check news, especially when getting it from less credible areas such as TikTok.

5. Washington Post

The Washington Post is a National Newspaper that is credited as being the most widely circulated newspaper within the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Washington Post has many stories that focus on breaking news, live footage, and analysis of topics regarding the Nation and International Relations. The Washington Post, unlike the other news sites listed above, is a primarily editorial outlet. This means that most of the pieces are written from the perspective of the writer. In other words, they are mostly opinion-based pieces. Similar to TikTok, this creates a barrier between fact and opinion. So the safest way to follow this news source is by cross-referencing it with other bigger and more credible sources (like Fox or NBC). Though it isn't credible to be the only source of news, The Washington Post does create a wide variety of information in several topics regarding the nation. It does make for interesting reads in retrieving information as well.
